View Full Version : Persona 4
This will be the last must buy game for the PS2.
And I know a lot of people are with me on this.

If it had a later release date it would have been the last must buy game for me, but since its release is before Mana Khemia, it's the second last must buy game for me (unless Mana Khemia 2 or Ar Tonelico 2 comes of course).
It'll be great to finally play it in march though.
I have no idea what this Mana Khemia is about... Maybe I should check it out... ... ... Okay, I'll pass on that. BUT if Dokapon Kingdom gets an European release, then P4 is the second last must buy PS2 game for me!
Still.
Persona 3 was one of the best PS2 RPGs and knowing how Atlus doesn't like to change something that has proved to be good, I'm pretty sure P4 will be AT LEAST the second best PS2 RPG evar.
I ordered the US version and had the artbook for free <3
I haven't play a lot though, but there is one thing that's great (and even greatest than great) : you can now control all your party ! In P3, I used to be desesperate in some battles because of my allies (but WHY Mitsuru lauches marin-karin instead of bufu when she can kill the monster !!! >.< ).
But I think that the dungeons in P4 (at least the first) are too tight, there are only corridors.
I have to get back to that AI-business in Persona 3... I found the AI - for the majority of time - quite good. Sure it sometimes made some of my teammates do something that I probably personally wouldn't have done, but it's not like anything ever went drastically wrong.
I think it's sometimes good to have AI controlled teammates in RPGs (if the AI is good, that is). It can be refreshing. I'm old and I'm tired and RPGs can be a lot of work, you know... So it's nice to have granny-friendly RPGs where the computer does some of the work for me.
yeah, the AI is not that bad, but, let's take an exemple (Mitsuru again). She casts bufu three times instead of casting directly mabufu. She loses MPs and increases the chance of missing. Or, when you haven't identify a monster but you know it has immunity against fire, your character doesn't mind and will cast agi... Or, when your character can kill the ennemy, but choses to cast a buff spell, and right after, the ennemy destroy your party... Like said in an anime : "I'm in despair !"

Persona 4 is amazingly good. Definitely buy it when you get the chance. They took everything that made Persona 3 good, then made it better.

I could rant and rant over and over about this game, but I think I'll hold back. I love it to bits. I started my second playthrough yesterday (I've had it beaten for a while)
I'm so glad I can control the party. P3 made me cry at the AI.
1. Someone's love of Marin Karin.
2. The final battle of the Journey. I could set everyone to use healing (especially if we needed some) when the boss' moonlit gown or whatever was up. Yet everyone would just go up and attack him (except Aigis).
3. The Answer. I stopped using Yukari unless I absolutely had to. Ken seemed less stupid . I could have Yukari set to healing, she could have full SP, and everyone could be dying, and all I'd get out of it was "[WAIT] Jeez, there's nothing I can do!". Someone pointed out to me that it seemed like she only ever healed status effects if she was suffering from them.
......I ranted about P3 instead. Agh... Anyway, The AI for P4 is a lot better, but I just like controlling my party.
Although, the one thing that P4 was not an improvement in every way over P3 (FES version) was costumes. WHERE WERE MY COSTUMES!?
Plus..
tarukaja + power charge + God's hand = Death. I love you Chie.
Though Mind Charge + Megidolan was quite nice too.
Also Outi- I loved Mana Khemia. But I'm also a GUST maniac, so I might not be the best source. I'd recommend it, but that's just me.

GUST are the ones who made the Mana Khemia, Atelier Iris and Ar Tonelico games. And I'm also a GUST maniac, though lately because I've been trying Atlus games like P3 I've also started to become somewhat of an Atlus maniac, and from what everyone says about P4, it'll probably make me more of an Atlus maniac. :)
Right well I'm obviously not a GUST geek 'cause I didn't even know what it is.... But that's okay. I bet you guys aren't Fallout geeks and I don't blame you for that ,D

GUST? Hooba jooba wha?
GUST is the developer of the Atelier Series games (Iris 1-3, Mana Khemia, Lise, the earlier ones) and the co developer of Ar Tonelico games [actually I'm not even sure what Banpresto has to do with Ar Tonelico. They might have just published it in Japan @_@)]
Those games are RPGS, with item making. They're addictive. ....when NIS America doesn't make them buggy bringing them out of Japan. >_>;;
TwilightRijax.. you beat me >_>;
For Persona 4, everyone is quite useable.. but I stuck with my favorites, a combination most would consider one of the worst (D=): Naoto, Teddie, and Chie.
For this playthrough I'll probably change it up, especially because of the dungeon conversations. [which will be even better because I am SO taking the lovers path with everyone this time]. Hurray for awkward conversations!
Oh man I can't wait for this game!

I bought Persona 4 from America. I pre-ordered it with EB Games and got the Visual Data Book or artbook whichever you wanna call it.
I can honestly say it's amazing. Great storyline, great everything to be honest and the vocie acting is top notch again too!'ve pre-ordered the UK version too just so i can play it on my PS3!

For Persona 4, everyone is quite useable.. but I stuck with my favorites, a combination most would consider one of the worst (D=): Naoto, Teddie, and Chie.
My final party was Yousuke, Yukiko, Naoto. I honestly hadn't planned on using Naoto, since I didn't like the idea of a character focusing almost entirely on instant death spells, but it turned out fine. As I expected, bosses were the only things that Naoto didn't absolutely wreck, but I had Yousuke and Yukiko for that.
For Yousuke: Tarukaja + Brave Blade = hax
For Yukiko: Fire Boost + Fire Amp + Accessory that boosts fire damage by 40% + Agidyne = super hax
I used Chie until Teddie joined, and used him until Naoto joined. Kanji didn't get much use since I really didn't care for his skill set. "I can do tons of damage....oh wait, no I can't, because anything that resists phys destroys me. Oh, but I'll just use my zio spells! Wait...no...my magic stat sucks and my SP is like 150 at level 50..."
Honestly, the only thing he brings to the table, besides not having any weakness after his persona upgrade, is Matarukaja, and Trumpeter can do that (among other things).
DON'T TALK ABOUT GAMEPLAY STRATEGIES!
You're making me wanna explode... T_T

Well, how were you using Naoto? Seriously. Mind charge + Megidolan. Plus Chakra Ring. I never ran out of SP again ever.
Also I can't believe you dropped Chie. You are mad. I can understand your Kanji feelings though. I love Kanji to bits, and I would have used him... sadly, he does seem to suck (Like many believed Naoto did, but that's simply not true) I never thought of a way to get around it. ._. I'm sorry Kanji...
Honestly, the only thing he brings to the table, besides not having any weakness after his persona upgrade, is Matarukaja, and Trumpeter can do that (among other things).
Doesn't Teddie also have Matarukaja? Ouch. That's another strike for Kanji.
My favorite personae to use were Norn (Debilitate ) and Ishtar. I ran out of patience to make trumpeter my first playthrough.
Outi: Sorry. I can't think of much more talk that will make your head not explode....
What were your favorite moments of the game? Mine probably were the whole culture festival ("I'd hit it..."), the school trip (not for the nostalgia. For the club.), and... well can I just count the whole fortune social link?

Instant death spells on anything that wasn't immune to it, Mind Charge + Megidoloan on bosses. Chakra Ring is the one that halves SP cost, right? I gave that to my protagonist since he had to buff and heal so often. Yukiko's healing spells were pretty much only there for emergencies.
Also I can't believe you dropped Chie. You are mad.
I knew how good she'd turn out ahead of time, which is why I wanted to use her, but I've just never been a huge fan of physical attacker characters, and I just didn't feel like taking the time to build her up to that point. I think I'll use her on my second playthrough though, since she does end up being pretty amazing.
Doesn't Teddie also have Matarukaja? Ouch. That's another strike for Kanji.
Yes he does. I forgot about that too. So yeah, the only reason I can really think of that Kanji might be nice to have is for the secret boss, since he doesn't have a weakness.
My favorite personae to use were Norn (Debilitate ) and Ishtar. I ran out of patience to make trumpeter my first playthrough.
I actually went through the trouble of getting Yoshitsune on my first playthrough. I wanted to get Hassou Tobi, but that would've required way more grinding than I was willing to do. But yeah, Trumpeter is amazing. Debilitate pretty much shuts down every boss in the game by default.
What were your favorite moments of the game? Mine probably were the whole culture festival ("I'd hit it..."), the school trip (not for the nostalgia. For the club.), and... well can I just count the whole fortune social link?

I know you can get multiple chakra rings, though I never did. Another thought is if you go with Rise for christmas, her item increases SP by 50%, and since only the Protagonist can use it... yeah. I didn't go with Rise though.
Yes he does. I forgot about that too. So yeah, the only reason I can really think of that Kanji might be nice to have is for the secret boss, since he doesn't have a weakness.
That's a good point. Maybe I should use Naoto in the secret boss fight *decked*

Debilitate is love. My brother is having trouble with the December boss (not the part that should cause him trouble though). And I was quite confused as to how. Appearently because he didn't have debilitate or Dekaja. That part of the fight might be the easiest thing ever. At least it was for me... Heck, I had girimehkala, so it went even faster with repel physical [and since I had Naoto, the one time it tried to mudoon me Naoto blocked it.]
He's stopped trying for now so he can try closer to Dec. 24th... I can't believe he hasn't maxed fortune though. I mean gosh. at least for Norn. Then again, maybe I'm just more awesome.
Hierophant link, the cooking contest, and December 3rd.
I sucked and never managed to finish the hierophant link. I was too focused on stat building. I'm sure I'll pull it off this time though.
Doujima is so awesome though. Actually, they all are.
It's Adachi's birthday today. I don't know whose birthday is up next though.

Hmm...I'm not sure if I should consider pre-ordering Persona 4, because of two things...
A) It's being published by Square Enix (in Europe), as I had troubles liking the company, after milking the FFVII cow, till it runs dry, as well as creating one or two bland adrongynous teenage male main characters in some games.
B) I'm not sure how Square Enix is going to handle the promotion side of things, considering it has some controversial stuff that even some SE games wouldn't touch. Though thankfully, the plot doesn't involve people summoning their Persona via their Evokers that shaped like guns and pointing them to their heads.
I prefer the summoning of P3, in P4, it's just... "I use my card. yeah ! here is my Persona !".
Then you should have pre-order the US version (plus, you don't have to wait :p )

I liked both games' methods of summoning, but I liked Persona 3's more, if only for how original it was. I just thought it was a cool idea.
I thought the summoning method in Persona 3 was so emo, I was ready to vomit marshmallows, syrup and razor blades... "I'm so emo! I'm gonna shoot myself! BANG! Oh GOD! WHY DIDN'T I DIE!?" XD

Since no one has posted this piece of info, i thought I'd do it, a special soundtrack with 24 songs will be included in Square-Enix's PAL release of the game. :D This is something i never thought Square-Enix would do so I'm really happy about it. :) Hmm i wonder if they'll include the opening on the special soundtrack though (because i really hate when a game has a good opening and comes with a soundtrack cd which doesn't include the opening, like Luminous Arc 2 did)?

Ahhh , :D. That is a nice bonus, similar to the NA/JP regions I imagine.
Square-Enix is giving stuff for free!?
Omigod! That's crazy! ... there must be some evil plan behind this charity...
Too bad the "special"-part in Special Soundtrack means it doesn't have all the songs that are on the Official Soundtrack... Which means that once you buy the OST, you can throw the SST out the window.
... maybe that's SE's plan... filling the world with CD garbage...?
That's awesome
Even if the full Soundtrack would be better, a SST is better than nothing, since we never get the OST in Europe.
Import is becoming useless, that's great :D
Day one for me :D Game of the year
Oh a quick sidenote... Persona 3 had probably the best looking in-game menus I've ever seen in any video game EVER. It's cool to see how they started using colour themes in these games. P3 obviously had a blue theme and P4 has a yellow theme.
Very, very classy ,D

yeah, it's only £10 :D
I got Persona 4 a while ago but decided not to start playing it because I was busy enough with Street Fighter 4, and after that I got Resident Evil 5 so I was busy with that. A few weeks ago I started playing it though, and I finally finished it today (took about 84 hours, playing on expert).
It definitely lived up to my expectations, and I like how they improved the battle system (being able to control all characters, not having to wait 1 turn because you get knocked down etc, P3 felt a bit too punishing that way). The story and dialogue was really good as well, especially later on in the game.
I finished this game today (True Ending). with +70H clocked. Didn't bother with most of the S.links but rather maxing out all stats took priority over it. I'll attempt to max them all out on my second playthrough.
I'm a bit disappointed with the New Game+, you only carry money, Persona Compedium, max S.Link items, discount key item, number of persona in inventory (12) and play time.
All that money and time wasted on equips to be lost, they could be nice at least to let you carry the accessories. Chakra Rings would come really useful.
Also, the supposed Ultimate Persona of the MC isn't that much worth, plus it's the only one that can't be registered, i heard. -_-
But that aside, I liked all the changes done over from P3. The game has a great storyline and it's unpredictable , In that's the best factor of the game, one mistery and riddle after the other.

That's true, chakra rings were awesome ;_; . I'm just glad it didn't carry over levels. That would have just made the plus game too boring.
I'm playing P3FES as of now, but looking at P4 it looks great.
Too bad I'll be too fed up with S. Links and dungeon crawling by the time I clear FES, so it may take a while before I play P4 :D
I'm just glad it didn't carry over levels. That would have just made the plus game too boring. I have to agree, it takes all the fun by starting a new game with the level of the last playthrough. Just like in P3.
I'm playing P3FES as of now, but looking at P4 it looks great.
Too bad I'll be too fed up with S. Links and dungeon crawling by the time I clear FES, so it may take a while before I play P4 :D I don't like the S.Links of FES, it's easy to make them go Reverse, if you attempt to max out all S.Links in one go, it's way too strict and you only have room for only 1 or 2 mistakes. In P4, you can finish all the S.Links and have a month free. :P
The worst part of the S. Links in FES is that you need to max them ALL to get Orpheus Telos. However, I don't care too much about that guy, and not being able to master all links the first time means I'll have fun maxing them in the next playthrough.
BTW, isn't the P4 MC a bit of a jerk at the very beginning?
Twice he sees Yosuke in pain, and twice he ignores him. I mean, come on! At least ask if he's alright!
I was avoiding spoilers, but since you heard about him... I have Orpheus Telos, I have two actually, one registered and other i made recenty, but i'm not pleased with either, mainly because of the junk skills they have. The registered one is perfect to tackle the ultimate boss, except it lacks Mind Charge. But i'll use Scatach, she is perfect to help, she has: Diarahan, Mind Charge, High Counter, Spell Master and other spells.
Here is my stored Orpheus Telos:
Fire Boost
Fire Amp
Ragnarok
High Counter
Unshaken Will
Morning Star
Victory Cry
Mahama <- Junk (If this was Mind Charge i'd be please with the outcome)
(Btw, Minato shouts "Orpheus" when it summons and not "Orpheus Telos".)
BTW, isn't the P4 MC a bit of a jerk at the very beginning?
Twice he sees Yosuke in pain, and twice he ignores him. I mean, come on! At least ask if he's alright! He helps him the third time, when he got stuck inside the trash can. lol
Some of the normal dialogues and S.Links are amusing in P4, I lol'd at some of the options that are give and their reactions, By the time you replay the game you'll probably have all the stats maxed and can see to the best dialogues.

Most of the story choices that require more "Stats" are still as useless the second time around as a warning.. :(
Story choices, yes, they are just for fun (and dilligence for fishing). But in S.Links they let you choose the best options that give more points, in some cases.

I liked Ryotaro dojima S.Link the most, it was pretty funny. I remember you have the chance call him a coward and it actually is the best option out of the three. XD
There is also some part where he says he looks to you as a younger brother, you have the chance to say: "Should I call you big bro?" Lol, just like Nanako calls you.

Oh lord, I worked on my plus game some more today... I forgot how painful the team's stupidity can be at times. Like in July for Example. Maybe I was just crabby and that's why I wanted to throw my controller at my TV but...
I mean, gracious- I'm pretty sure Teddie isn't going to change his opinion on if anyone was in the TV or not. No matter how many times you ask him. And if he didn't show up on the Midnight Channel, I think it's safe to say he wasn't thrown in. It's not like they have to believe there are multiple killers, but seriously. Please, just grasp the simple facts.
Do you mean the part in July where Yosuke constantly asks Teddie if anyone else was there besides him? If so, then I have to agree, if it didn't showed up on the Midnight Channel, it was obvious, it never stepped there in the first place, but...
Regardless being far-off from the truth, they do have a point that makes a lot of sense at the time.Since you already stopped the criminal three times in a row, he could well kill his next victim in the real world to make sure it was successful. We both know the true suspect isn't that stupid to make that mistake and be caught, but at that time they don't.
But I don't think that's reason enough for you to throw the remote at the TV. ;P

Oh sweet spoiler tags!
Well yeah.
I mean, they DID make a good point, but I simply wanted them to understand a simple fact.
Though my frustration might have also been that I really just wanted to hurry up and save because I found out I had to go somewhere. I mean, the scene felt padded in a way.
I DON'T KNOW GUYS HE WASN'T ON THE MIDNIGHT CHANNEL AND TEDDIE SAYS NO ONE WENT IN. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN. I DON'T GET IT. * 10
I mean that's time that easily could have been spent having Teddie sparkle and hit on anyone in a five mile radius! =P
